Our Origin and Evolution

Founded in 2019 within the Chemistry Department at the University of British
Columbia, Chemists for Diversity and Inclusion (CDI) has evolved from its
initial form as a Women in Chemistry group. This transformation was driven
by our recognition of the need for a more inclusive approach. Today, CDI
stands as a beacon of advocacy for all underrepresented groups in the
scientific community. Our mission is driven by the belief that diversity and
inclusion are crucial for the success of science and its practitioners.

We believe everyone has a place in STEM and that everyone's voice deserves to be heard.

Our Mission

CDI is dedicated to advocating for equity, diversity, and inclusivity in chemistry and STEM. We believe that scientific progress is inherently linked to these values. Our focus is to foster meaningful dialogues and implement changes that reflect our commitment to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI).

Our Vision

Our calendar is rich with events that support and celebrate EDI:

  • Journal Club Meetings: A platform for in-depth exploration and discussion of EDI-centric academic papers. These meetings are crucial for expanding our understanding and shaping our collective perspective.

  • Cultural Nights: These gatherings are a celebration of the diverse tapestry of cultures within our community, offering a chance to learn about and from each other in a more personal and enriching way.

  • Guest Speakers and Workshops: We regularly host guest speakers and conduct workshops to deepen our community's awareness and understanding of EDI issues. These sessions are instrumental in broadening our horizons and enhancing our approach to fostering a more inclusive scientific community.

  • Outreach Events: Our outreach initiatives are designed to extend the joy and fascination of chemistry to underrepresented communities. These events are not just about showcasing the wonders of chemistry; they are a bridge to inspire and engage future scientists from diverse backgrounds. Through hands-on activities, demonstrations, and interactive discussions, we aim to ignite a passion for science in young minds.

CDI is a hub for students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty members to convene and engage in discussions that are pivotal to both our scientific pursuits and our societal impact.

Join Our Journey

We warmly invite you to join us in this important mission. Your voice and active participation are key to driving the change we envision. At CDI, everyone in the STEM field — students, post-docs, faculty members — is encouraged to contribute to and benefit from a culture where diversity is not just acknowledged, but deeply valued. Together, let's continue to make strides in transforming the scientific world into a place that is truly inclusive and equitable for all.
